1. Summary
This product bulletin announces
the availability of the Cisco® MDS 9222i multiservice modular switch and the Cisco
MDS 9000 Family 18/4-port multiservice module. The Cisco MDS 9222i Multiservice Modular Switch This switch is the next generation of the Cisco
MDS 9216i multilayer switch with 18 ports capable of speeds of 4, 2, and 1Gbps, 4 Gigabit Ethernet IP
storage services ports, and an expansion slot to host the Cisco MDS 9000
family switching and services module. It is an optimized platform for deploying
high-performance storage area network (SAN) extension solutions, distributed
intelligent fabric services, and cost-effective multiprotocol connectivity
for both open and mainframe environments. With a compact form factor,
modularity, and advanced capabilities normally available only on
director-class switches, the Cisco MDS 9222i is an ideal solution for
departmental and remote branch-office SANs. The Cisco
MDS 9000 Family 18/4-Port Multiservice Module This module is the next generation of the Cisco
MDS 9000 family 14/2 multiservice module supported in the Cisco MDS 9200
series multilayer fabric switches and Cisco MDS 9500 series multilayer
directors and offers 18 1, 2, and 4Gbps Fibre Channel ports and 4 1-Gigabit
Ethernet IP storage services ports. It provides multiprotocol capabilities
integrating, in a single-form-factor, Fibre Channel, Fibre Channel over IP
(FCIP), Small Computer System Interface over IP (iSCSI), IBM Fiber
Connnectivity (FICON), FICON Control Unit Port (CUP) management, and switch
cascading. 2.
What’s New? The Cisco MDS 9222i Multiservice Modular Switch The 9222i comes with 18 FC ports and 4 GE IP ports
activated. It includes a SAN extension license and the ability to do routing
from FC to IP. It is powered by Cisco MDS 9000 SAN-OS software and is
compatible with Cisco MDS 9500 series multilayer directors providing
transparent, end-to-end service delivery in core-edge deployments. With the
modularity provided by the expansion slot, the Cisco MDS 9222i has the
flexibility to scale up to a 66-port Fibre Channel switch with the Cisco MDS
9000 family 48-port 4Gbps Fibre Channel switching module or to host applications
such as data migration (Data Mobility Manager) with the Cisco MDS 9000 family
32-port storage services module. Cisco MDS 9222i supports Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP)
compression, Inter-VSAN routing for FCIP, FCIP write acceleration, and SAN
Extension Tuner features with the SAN Extension over IP package. Using the
Enterprise License package, it also secures sensitive traffic through
hardware-based encryption with IP Security (IPsec). The Cisco MDS 9222i
dramatically enhances hardware-based compression performance for both
high-and low-speed links, providing immediate cost savings for expensive WAN
infrastructure. The Cisco
MDS 9000 Family 18/4-Port Multiservice Module The 18/4 comes with 18 FC ports and 4GE IP ports
activated. It supports Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) compression, Inter-VSAN
routing for FCIP, FCIP write acceleration, and SAN Extension Tuner features
with the SAN Extension over IP package. By default, the module does NOT
include a SAN Extension license and the licenses should be purchased

The Cisco
MDS 9000 Family 18/4-Port Multiservice Module
The
following table summarizes the parts available for the Cisco 9222i switch and
18/4-port module. Partners should contact their channel representative for
pricing information.
The base MDS 9222 multiservice module switch with 22 ports (18FC, 4GE) will be sold with the following capabilities: ·
18 4Gbps active ports – SFPs NOT included ·
4 1Gbps active ports ·
SAN Extension license and ability to do routing from FC to IP ·
VSANs (but no Inter-VSAN routing) ·
PortChannels – Link aggregation ·
Cisco Fabric Manager ·
Accessory Kit – Includes Warrant Cards, rack mount kit, etc. Software Options SAN Extension License Even though a SAN Extension license is included for the
9222i switch, it should be purchased separately for the 18/4 multiport
service module to enable remote SAN extension features on the blade. The same
rules apply to the SAN Extension license for the 14/2 and 8-port IP services
line cards. The Cisco 9222i can also be ordered with an Enterprise
Manager Information (takes you to the Cisco Web site) The feature is licensed PER SWITCH. Fabric Manager
Server Package License The switch can also be ordered with Fabric Manager Server,
which extends the base Fabric Manager Server license with features such as
centralized fabric management, historical performance monitoring, and
application integration. Fabric

License The switch can also be ordered with the Mainframe package,
which enables switch operation in mainframe storage networks, including IBM
FICON protocol and CUP management, switch cascading, fabric binding, and

Manager The switch can also be ordered with the Data Mobility
Manager, which is a storage area network (SAN) fabric-based software
application that enables movement of blocks of data from a source device to a
destination device. The main component of the Cisco MDS DMM runs on the Cisco
MDS 9000 family SSM module that fits into the Cisco MDS 9216 and MDS 9222i
multilayer fabric switches and the Cisco MDS 9506, MDS 9509, and MDS 9513
multilayer directors. Data
